Started in 1984 under the administration of military governor Gbolahan Mudasiru, construction continued to stall under military regimes and the stadium became a white elephant. In 2006, homeless people and children were living in the area around the facility. In 2009 the stadium was used to host the 2009 U-17 World Cup.
